Kilcreggan Training Bash

With Gare Loch looking nice and calm, I thought I might as well do another training run in the Taran to Kilcreggan. All was nice and calm until I passed Rosneath Point, at which point I was, as per usual, slap bang into the wind and swell. The nearer I came to Kilcreggan, the bigger the swell became, with the wind and swell coming across the Clyde all the way from somewhere south of Dunoon. It was a fair fetch.

I could also see the darkening skies above the hills near Dunoon, showing that a storm was brewing. And yet, to my left across the Clyde, Gourock was bathed in sunshine.

At Kilcreggan, I stopped for a quick leg stretch before setting off on my return. I didn’t want to linger too long, as the sky was darkening by the minute and the winds were strengthening. I had to paddle out towards Gourock from Kilcreggan before turning to make the most of the downwind swell. I had some great surfs on the waves.

All too soon, I was back at Rosneath Point and, predictably, as I turned north towards Gare Loch, sheltered by the peninsula, things became flat calm. I still had a few exposed areas to cross, such as Rosneath Bay. I was distracted by a twin-masted yacht at the marina for a while before making for the narrows at Rhu and plotting a course for home.

The storm had passed over the hills of the peninsula and was now well and truly in Gare Loch. A loch-wide rainbow welcomed me back.

Fab!
