We were having a lovely relaxing afternoon on the Port Nan Gael campsite, when I saw another camper van with a Rockpool Taran on its roof come into the campsite. This is not something you see every day, so I went to say hello to the owner, explaining I also own a Taran, but I hadn't brought it with me, opting instead for the NDK Romany Surf. Russ, the Tarans owner, was keen to go for a paddle, so I agreed to join him, hoping I could keep up with Russ in the Taran. Russ promised not to go too fast.
By now the wind had picked up a bit and there was a lot of messy swell on the loch. We headed down the loch to the rocks we could see at Eilean an Fheoir, but as we approached we could see many seals on the rocks, so we changed direction giving the seals a wide berth. As it was many seals came out towards us to check us out. With our direction change we were now paddling directly into the swell and wind. It was fun and thankfully I could keep up with Russ, although I was kicking myself for not having brought my Taran.
At the far side of the loch we found a small harbour. The sea on that side of the loch was fairly sheltered from the wind and there was little swell. But as we had "promised" to be not too long, we decided to head back to the campsite across the loch. It wasn't quite the downwind run we had hoped, as the wind was now on our port sides, but the swell did provide a good few surfs.
Two paddles for me in one day. Whoohoo!
